ISG D-ITET managed laptops optional setup

Optional setup

ETH polybox / Owncloud client / webdav connection

You can set up the preinstalled application ownCloud desktop sync client (or on the command line with owncloud -s) to use the Polybox service at https://polybox.ethz.ch with your ETH user account to syncronise specific directories.

Alternatively you can set up the preinstalled backup solution Backups (or deja-dup on the command line) to backup to your Polybox through the webdav connection preconfigured in the file manager:

  1. Start Backups

  2. Create a new storage location of type Network Server

  3. Use the Server Address davs://polybox.ethz.ch/remote.php/webdav

This is the recommended way to set up a storage location, as it ensures the connection to Polybox is activated automatically by Backups before running a backup.
Connecting to Polybox through the preconfigured file manager bookmark and subsequently setting this up as a storage location of type Local Folder is possible, but not recommended, as this will not automatically activate the connection before running a backup.

Keep in mind, the Polybox quota is 50 GB.

ETH printers

ETH central IT services provide a convenient application to install ETH printers which we preinstalled. It is called ETH Printers (ethz-cups-config-app on the command line). Its use should be self-explanatory.

OneDrive client

To use the Linux OneDrive client available on managed laptops, each user has to authorize its usage personally:

  1. Log in to your ETH Microsoft account and open your MyApps page.

  2. Under Add apps select Request new apps

  3. Select OneDrive Client for Linux

  4. Klick on Add after selecting the app
You should see a confirmation afterwards. If you don't, repeat the above steps.

  5. Open the application OneDrive GUI on your laptop and follow the steps of the installation wizard

The client itself is a terminal command called onedrive with its own man page (see man onedrive).
