Protocols

You can access your mails remotely using your preferred mail client. Our mail server supports the following protocols:

IMAP (Mail reading / managing)

IMAP is a protocol for reading and managing emails remotely, which leaves all the emails stored on the mail server. The mail client just shows you a list of your messages. As this requires only a small data transfer this works well even over a slow connection such as a modem. Only if you request to read a specific email will it be downloaded from the server. The IMAP-Server for your email at D-ITET is called:

imap.ee.ethz.ch

We use Dovecot as IMAP server.

SMTP (Mail posting)

The SMTP protocol is used by the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) to deliver your eMail to the recipient's mail server. The SMTP-Server for Computers of the D-ITET is called:

smtp.ee.ethz.ch

We use Postfix as SMTP server. It supports SSL encryption and SMTP-authentication so that it is possible to use it remotely.
