Every ETH account is authorized for certain network areas (Realms). Via WLAN you will be able to log in to these realms by using the syntax '''<username>@<realm>.ethz.ch'''.
Valid Realms for your account will be shown after you log into [[https://realms.ethz.ch/|realms.ethz.ch]] with your '''regular ETH login and password'''.

Typically you would choose one of the following three realms
 * '''<username>@student-net.ethz.ch''' if your are student at ETH
 * '''<username>@staff-net.ethz.ch''' if your are a staff member of ETH
 * '''<username>@guest-net.ethz.ch''' if your are a guest at ETH

== Wireless networks ==
Currently the ETH wireless networks operate in two frequency ranges:
 * '''2.4 GHz''': offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds
 * '''5 GHz''': provides faster data rates at a shorter distance

If faster speeds are most important to you, select a 5 GHz wireless network with the suffix ''-5''. If the wireless range is more important to you, select a 2.4 GHz wireless network without a suffix.

Connect to WLAN with Windows 10

Since mid November 2018 the eduroam WLAN is the preferred wireless network at ETH. This is a step-by-step guide for Windows 10 to connect to eduroam.

Realms

Every ETH account is authorized for certain network areas (Realms). Via WLAN you will be able to log in to these realms by using the syntax <username>@<realm>.ethz.ch. Valid Realms for your account will be shown after you log into realms.ethz.ch with your regular ETH login and password.

Typically you would choose one of the following three realms

  • <username>@student-net.ethz.ch if your are student at ETH

  • <username>@staff-net.ethz.ch if your are a staff member of ETH

  • <username>@guest-net.ethz.ch if your are a guest at ETH

WLAN/VPN login and password

  • Make sure you know the username with the realm you intend to use

  • Make sure you know your WLAN/VPN password before continuing!

  • Make sure WLAN is activated on your computer

Open Wi-Fi settings

In the Windows start menu

  • Type wifi

  • Select Change Wi-Fi settings

  • Wi-Fi settings open

Delete known networks eth-5, eth, public-5 and public

In case you experience problems connecting to the eduroam network, remove all previous connections to an ETH wireless network and start over afterwards.

In Wi-Fi settings

  • Select Manage known networks

  • A list of known networks appears
  • Select each of the networks eth-5, eth, public-5 public if they're available and klick on Forget

Add new network eduroam

If you're using WLAN in close proximity to a non-ETH building also offering eduroam WLAN (like the University Hospital) use the eth WLAN in place of eduroam.

In Wi-Fi settings

  • Select Show avaliable networks

  • A list of available networks appears
  • Select eduroam (eduroam-5, eth, eth-5 are possible as well)

  • Klick Connect

A dialog requesting "User name" and "Password" appears

  • Enter <username>@<realm>.ethz.ch

  • Enter your WLAN/VPN password in the the field Password

  • Klick on OK

A dialog "Continue connecting? ..." appears

  • Klick on Continue connecting

Wireless networks

Currently the ETH wireless networks operate in two frequency ranges:

  • 2.4 GHz: offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds

  • 5 GHz: provides faster data rates at a shorter distance

If faster speeds are most important to you, select a 5 GHz wireless network with the suffix -5. If the wireless range is more important to you, select a 2.4 GHz wireless network without a suffix.
