ID Storage

This page gives detailed information for all users that had been moved to the new Storage System.

Remark: These information are not valid for users still residing on the old storage.

UID Number/GID Number

  • To make the UID/GID numbers ETH wide unique we are changing your UID and GID Number during migration. These numbers defines the real ownership of a file/directory. For this reason we change the ownership of all your files across all ITET systems to the new numbers. This includes a change of the group's name your username belongs to as well. The new group is a so called "user private group" (UPG) and its name is $username-group. Attention: Your username stays unchanged!

  • As you can imagine the change of ownership of all your files will take some time. We start the modification in your home ($HOME). Data residing on /scratch and other systems are changed afterwards. So keep in mind that some data might not be accessible directly after migration.

Extra Homes

  • In case you own one or more extra homes the data will also be migrated onto the new storage. The extra home data will be stored underneath $HOME/extra-homes. Links pointing to extra homes are adjusted to the new location.

SAMBA (SMB/CIFS) File Service

  • The new home is still available via SMB/CIFS. Attention: The UNC path has changed. The easiest way to access your new home (and other shares you are permitted for) is by means of the new global name space environment: \\itet-stor.ee.ethz.ch\$username. (Direct access to your home is provided via: \\itet-stor.ee.ethz.ch\$username\home)

NFS File Service

  • The new home is still available via NFS. The path to the home is unchanged: /home/$username (or $HOME). You also benefit from the new global name space environment (see SAMBA above). You can access all your data from one central location: /itet-stor/$username (Direct access to your home is provided via: /itet-stor/$username/home)

Access Control List (ACL) for UNIX

  • Preamble: We do not set UNIX ACL's on files/directories per default. So if you have not set any UNIX ACL's on your own you can safely ignore this paragraph.
  • The new storage system does not support UNIX ACL's. Therefore any UNIX ACL setting on files or directories within your old home gets lost. In the corresponding event we provide a list of affected files (including the specific UNIX ACL).
  • On the other hand the new storage system does support NFCv4 ACL's. But we strongly recommend not to use them since they are not preserved by most UNIX Tools (e.g. copy, chmod).

Snapshots

  • In the event that data were deleted by mistake a user is now capable to restore his data immediately up to 6 days back.
  • Linux: A new directory SNAPSHOT in $HOME provides the latest 6 snapshots. These snapshots are browse-able like a normal files system. Data can be restored using standard UNIX tools.
  • Windows: Using Windows Explorer a right mouse click on a file or folder and an additional click on "Properties" opens a new window. In tab "Previous Versions" the latest 6 snapshots are listed. A double click on a certain date opens a new Explorer providing access to the requested data.

Old Home Data

  • We keep your old home data for a certain time before they are deleted finally. In the unexpected case that you are missing some data in your new home after migration we can easily restore them. But direct access to your old home is locked.
